But the reality is that we judge each other every day based on how we look.  Remember Susan Boyle's audition for Britain's Got Talent?  She was a frumpy, overweight 40-something in a dress 20 years out of style.  No one thought she had anything to offer...until she opened her mouth and sang, that is.  Everyone who had scorned her suddenly felt foolish.  They had "judged a book by its cover."

But overlooking the diamond in the brown paper bag happens with startling regularity.  How many other people with Susan Boyle's talent are walking around unnoticed because of how they dress?  Probably more than you realize.

Which is why packing yourself correctly consistently is so important.  If you've put a lot of time and energy into your career or social life, it's time to reap the rewards.  And the best way to do that is by following the lead of style icons.

But is it even possible to dress well consistently, particularly if you're on a tight budget?

Absolutely! In fact, Jacqueline Bouvier was on a very tight budget as a teen yet was still named “Debutante of the Year” in 1947 wearing a clearance sale, off-the-rack gown.  Her regal presence clinched the title. She learned well and early how to package herself for impact on a budget; it was the Kennedy fortune and presidency that pushed her into the international spotlight.

This was the part of the style puzzle I’d been missing for years -- until I stumbled upon it by accident over the holidays. I was flipping through an old “how to dress” book from 1917, curious to see what fashion advice they gave back then…when I found it.

Wardrobe-building information SO profound, I put down the book, found my husband, and said, “I know how they did it.”

“They” being the style icons throughout history like:

--and “it” being the careful orchestration of wardrobes so admired, they were copied by countless women.   Books have been written about their clothes. Collectible dolls have been made in their likenesses, like the one pictured here of Diana, Princess of Wales. But why?

Why are we transfixed by these women? And how did they build a legacy of style and grace that have withstood decades, centuries, or some cases, millennia?

It wasn’t by accident or happenstance. That much I knew. But how did and do these women consistently turn themselves out in one show-stopping outfit after another?
